In response to the earlier qn on why do I think that it's so hard for children (or adults) to create their own programs:
First, I find that it's difficult because there's a lack of simple tools to create a program. We know that currently, programs are created using programming language which you would know by now is something which I have problem understanding. So, I would definitely find it hard to to create my own program. And I'm sure that there are also many others who can't program and wouldn't be too interested to learn it in depth as well. So the availability of simple tools is very important.
It's also difficult because you need to have an idea of what you want to create and how you want them placed on the interface. If the job of creating the program is left to the individual, they might have to do a few times of trial and error before they figure out what type of arrangement for the interface best suits them. While this might seem odd because the author claimed that the benefit of letting users create their own program is so that they can have the tools most useful to them and have the design customized to their own preference, the problem is that not everyone is taught interface design. So what seems logical and ideal in mind might turn out to be slightly problematic in practice and eventually change is necessary. Impatient users might just give up after 1 or 2 attempts and revert to buying ready made programs because it saves time and hassle. You just need to install it into the PC and it's ready for use with mostly the functions you need. It might take a little learning which we are all already used to it as compared to coming up with our own programs.
I believe that it would be easier if users are given the chance to make changes to the program already available to them. Not everyone can come up with a program from scratch, but everyone can critique a ready made program. After using it, users can customize the tools and interface to suit themselves will definitely be much easier. Of course, ultimately we still need to be able to change designs simply enough even for children to learn so that users will not be put off by it and accept what is already made for them out of convenience.

Actually, this is one direction that people have taken - allowing users to customize their applications. Most software now allows at least some form of preferences or customization. As you said, this is much more practical than expecting users to create their own tools, something which most people won't want to do.
